A China-based tech and internet company revealed a new phone that is described as a cheap alternative to iPhone.Apple’s iPhone currently dominates the smart phone market, including that in China. Xiaomi Technology’s Xiaomi Phone is set to rival this giant by offering the $470 cheaper phone to the public.Xiaomi Phone comes with a price of 1,999 yuan $313. iPhone currently sells at around 3,000 yuan.

Xiaomi Phone runs on Android and is lightweight at 149 grams but appears to be slightly larger than iPhone 4. It is powered with a 1.5 Gigahertz dual core processor. It’s impressive that it was able to pack that power despite its size. It has a big screen and supports touchscreen option. It has high-quality signal and powerful battery. Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Technology, boasted that the only thing that can be considered “low” in their new phone is its price.

Mobile phone connections in China just crossed 926 million, only a few millions away from hitting the one billion mark. Xiaomi Technology hopes to own a huge percentage of smart phone users at least in China. Q2 last year marked more than 16.81 million smart phones sold in China. That’s 7.5$ more than the previous quarter.

The target markets to launch the new low-cost phone are those where mobile phone connections are crossing 926 million, inching towards a billion. IT consulting firm Analysys International says that this number will continue to increase. Currently, HTC and Lenovo’s smart phone LePhone, and the iPhone are among the favorite smart phone units in China.

The competition within the market for smartphones is expected to get more fierce as international competitors are looking to grab a greater slice in both China and worldwide. However, at this point Chinese companies only have a small part of the global market.

Opera and Mi-Fone teams up to provide affordable smart phones in SA. The deal means that Mi-Fone will carry Opera as its mobile browser and could potentially pave way for users to access the Internet for a cheaper price.

Alpesh Patel CEO of Mi-Fone stressed that their efforts will make a huge difference in smart phone markets because of its mere low-cost and the ability to access the Internet wirelessly. Africa is the newest target of many big mobile companies.

Mi-Fone has already sold more than one million units in Dubai and is powered by Google’s Android operating system and just like Mi-Fone, Google Android is more focused on servicing mass market rather than a few high end and select population.

Head of Mobile at Google South Africa Brett St Clair said that there is more success in controlling the larger market. She pointed that iPhone only has 2% of the world’s mobile phone market and that what they want is the other 98% that constitutes the mass market.

Mi-Fone is not in any way following the footsteps of big manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Research In Motion and others which all produced high end and expensive smart phones to go head to head with the popular iPhone. Mi-Fone’s market could be compared to that of the other brands like Nokia and LG’s cheaper models.

Opera Mini browser is currently the top mobile browser. This is hugely because of it lower memory and data consumption compared to other browsers. Cost of data is expensive in countries like Africa and using Opera as your browser can dictate the amount of your monthly phone bill.

Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software also said that this partnership is attuned with their company’s vision and mission of bringing internet access to a wider population.

WeLoveWP.hk claims that an unnamed Microsoft official told them that Tango is official. This information was leaked during MSDN seminar in Hong Kong just a few days ago.

A blog based in Hong Kong noted that the Windows Phone Tango is a slimmer version of Windows Phone 7 and it is just as pumped. It will of course carry basic services and features like Bing search and most likely social media integration. The report however failed to give enough specifics about the phone that could make you really excited about it.

Microsoft is yet to confirm the report as of this writing.

A cheaper version of Windows Phone 7 would be advantageous for the company and its partnership with Nokia. Nokia is currently the largest mobile phone manufacturer outside of the United States and it has a desire to power their new line of phones for the US market with Windows Phone 7. Interestingly, Nokia is yet to announce the future of its Symbian and MeeGo OSs (operating systems) on other parts of the world.

For the moment, Nokia keeps on rolling out new phones powered by Belle, the latest version of Symbian OS. Last Wednesday, the company sported Nokia 700, 701, and 600. They described it as the “smallest,” “brightest,” and “loudest” (in the order) to date. Nokia will also be releasing cheap dual SIM phone Nokia 101 and Nokia 100 this quarter.

Belle is of course is a bit limited when you compare it to Windows Phone 7, but recently, Belle increased the number of icons that you can put on your home screen from 3 to 6.

Experts agree that Microsoft will release Tango between Mango and Apollo. Mango is a new Windows Phone that packs in more than 500 new features to its line. It is expected to be released 4th quarter of 2011. Apollo will surely be out next year which means that Tango can be on the market by late 2011 or early 2012.

Amidst the dominance of expensive smart phones in the market, Nokia makes an unsuspecting move of releasing its cheapest phones to date, the Nokia 101 and Nokia 100.

Nokia 101 and Nokia 100 phones are basic phones that pack in modern design and most needed features at a fraction of a price.

The Nokia 101 is a dual SIM phone and is the cheapest on this line. The dual SIM feature allows users to use different phone networks on the single phone, where they can receive voice calls, multimedia messages and text messages alternately.

The users can make up to five custom profiles for each SIM used on Nokia 101. This means that the user can use as many as 5 different SIMs regardless of the phone network on that phone without sacrificing profile settings like names, logos and other SIM customizations.

Owning different SIMs has a lot of advantages as pointed out by Nokia press release. The aim of dual SIM phone after all is to help users manage costs and coverage by changing the network used when necessary.

Nokia 101 also sports a built-in MP3 player and a loudspeaker. Memory capacity is up to 16 GB through the use of a microSD.

Nokia 100 is even cheaper than Nokia 101. It sports a grid-based menu system with fun and eye-friendly icons. It has an FM radio and other basic modern phone features.

Both of these new phones can avail of Nokia Life Tools where users can access relevant and up to date information on education, healthcare, agriculture and entertainment on the go.

Nokia 101 will be out this September for a price of 35 USD while Nokia 100 will be out in time for Holidays for 30 USD. The 101 will be available in Phantom Black and Coral Red shades while the 100 will be in more classic and youthful colors of Legion Blue, Ocean Blue, Festival Pink, Coral Red and Phantom Black.

Mozilla developer of the leading browser Firefox wants to make designing web-based applications for mobile phones a lot easier. Through the project called WebAPI, the giant in open source platform hopes to simplify application development along different phone platforms including iPhones, Windows phones and Android phones.

Mozilla is in fact already hired programmers to push this project and according to CNET, we can have a taste of this new technology as early as February next year. Jonas Sicking of Mozilla Labs revealed through a newsletter that their organization is still hiring more people to work on the project.

Applications for web have improved tremendously over the past years, but even up to now the ability of these apps to work seamlessly on mobile phones is very limited. This is why the advancement of smart phones corresponds to huge revamps in native mobile app programming. And as for Mozilla, this means providing HTML-based software with unique application programming interfaces or APIs to the mobile phone market.

Should WebAPI succeed; the lives of many developers will be a lot easier. The time when programmers would need to learn different codes and engineer different software for specific mobile phone platform can soon be a thing of the past.

This standardization of new WebAPI interfaces will be pushed on the World Wide Web Consortium. This is a big move since W3C already lost HTML standardization initiative to Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group.

The WebAPI according to experts will pave way for the creation of mobile phones with high browsing speed comparable to desktops and laptops. It can also improve JavaScript performance, a protocol that is required in many websites to function well on hand held devices. Nonetheless, WebAPI may also catapult Mozilla to take the lead into mobile phone browsers, a market that is closely being shared by Microsoft, Google, Apple and Opera.

Mobile phone manufacturers will soon face a tough competition from Sony. The company recently made it public and official that their PS Vita is being geared to compete against mobile phones.

Sony confirmed that the new version of PS Vita will come up with a lot of app supports that are typically reserved for smart phones. Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Internet browsing and other social media and Internet applications will be made available to PS Vita very soon. Sony consequently will also be putting games that are available to Wi-Fi and other 3G-enabled platforms available for download.

All these extensions and features used to be exclusively tethered to mobile phones and with PS Vita’s plunging in to the more mainstream market; it may not be too far before other companies follow through. Recently, there have been rumors that Sony was loading development kits of their PS Vita to independent developers. This move according to speculators means that Sony is serious about penetrating the phone and application market. Whether Sony will soon go head to head with Apple is of course another story.

If Sony’s game pricing remains the same it will be real promising platform. Just imagine how a hybrid of a real gaming console and smart phone with all its applications can turn a casual gamer into a smart phone junkie and vice versa.

Sony already has the PSP which in one way or another has some of these smart phone capabilities but needless to say, PSP didn’t go through well penetrating app and phone market. This new move clearly will try to succeed where PSP figuratively failed. If this proves to be successful, the Vita will be a breakthrough gadget that will redefine phones and gaming consoles.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently designed a smart phone application intended to help find missing children.
Dubbed as Child ID app, the new free tool aims to prevent increase in the number of missing children in the United States. According to FBI, at least eight hundred thousand children go missing every year – a number that the government hopes to decrease through this new technology.

Child ID application stores important information like height and weight, health issues and other crucial data as well as pictures of your children. This information is readily available for you and the authorities once the need arises.
FBI Special Agent Aida Reyes said that losing a child can be a very traumatic experience. “A lot of people won’t be able to think straight, so everything there is consolidated in one specific area,” she added implying how the application makes it easier for authorities to gather data about the missing child.

The application allows parents to show critical information including physical identifiers about the missing child to the authorities on the spot. This information can then be disseminated to the authorities’ network easily.
Child ID application also allows fast communication between the parents and the authorities. Parents can quickly e-mail additional information to authorities through a few clicks. It also shows basic information on what to do once your child has gone missing.

Child ID is the first application designed by FBI. Information recorded on the app stays on the smart phone so you don’t have to worry about leaking sensible data about your child. Child ID is currently exclusive to iPhone but the bureau plans to expand the app’s availability to other smart phone platforms such as Android.

HTC has just released the ultimate phone for Facebook users, the HTC Status Facebook Phone. It’s not that Facebook is hurting with the coming of Google Plus but still this company wanted to capitalize on the more than 750 million users of the social networking website.

Among other reasons, HTC Status Facebook phone is aiming to make accessing the website a lot easier. In fact this is the first phone to be built around the social network site, with a funky and exclusive Facebook button.

The phone has a censor and the Facebook button on the front will tell you when you’re doing something that you can share on Facebook. This “context-aware” button will flash light everytime you do something like take pictures or take video, reminding you that you can share them on Facebook and update your friends and such. Why not look at Phone Insurance for this great HTC Facebook phone!

Also, the Facebook button can work as a shutter when the phone is in camera mode. It will automatically drop the image into the phone’s Facebook app, prompting you to caption your picture and tag your friends instantly.

The Facebook button can also be used while you’re on browsing mode. It can pick up the link and prompt you to add comment or even tag people in your wall post.

While not doing anything, just pressing down the Facebook button will prompt you to update your Facebook status in what you’re doing – or simply what’s on your mind.

The Facebook button always asks for confirmation so you won’t be in danger of sharing things that you don’t want to share. The button is also disabled while reading text messages and emails so you can still function with a lot of privacy left.

HTC Status Facebook runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbreader), sports a 2.6-inch screen and is first to appear in Europe as ChaCha. It is now also available in the U.S. for $50 bundled with a 2 year contract with AT&T.

The new 4G system will provide services to areas that were once deemed unreachable by cell phone networks.
