With 3 yet to announce its prices, there is already a variety of tariffs available to suit your individual requirements. The 2 year contracts can work out to be more cost-effective, however given Apple’s previous release frequency, it’s likely a new iPhone model will be out before the 2 year contract is ready for upgrade.

Whichever iPhone tariff you choose to take on, be sure to get your iPhone insured – leading brands will charge up to £15 a month for iPhone insurance without some of the added benefits included in an Insure and Smile iPhone Policy.

The Apple iPad is finally available to the UK market. The iPad has sold more than one million units since its launch in the US eight weeks ago, more even than the iPhone when it launched in 2007. The success in the US has lead to delays in launching the iPad in many other markets around the world.

The UK is one of several global markets where the iPad is being launched today; other launches include Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Australia.

First in the line at the Regent Street store was Jake Lee, a 17-year-old from Essex who had been waiting since the day before to get his iPad. Apple Fan Stephen Fry joined the crowd outside Apple’s flagship West End store for the launch of the iPad.

When asked about the product’s critics — who complain about both the cost and its closed platform – he replied: “The blogosphere is always negative at first, because they see it from the point of view of technology, whereas Apple sees it from the point of view of people”.

iPad’s success within the US has reaffirmed Apple as the worlds largest technology company by market valuation and worldwide sales are expected to reach almost 5million within its first year.

The Apple iPad is finally available for pre-order within the UK, after its initial launch on 27th January 2010. Pre-ordering was due to commence in March, however delays have now lead to a 28th May release date.

The Apple iPad is finally available for pre-order within the UK, after its initial launch on 27th January 2010. Pre-ordering was due to commence in March, however delays have now lead to a 28th May release date.

Apple sold over one million iPad devices within the first month in the US and this has been given as the reason for the delay in the UK. The IPad available for pre-order from £429 for the basic Wi-Fi unit. Expanding the memory to 32GB will cost £499 and £599 for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi and 3G units are being sold at an extra £100 respectively.

The iPad will be available through 3 network providers: O2, Orange and Vodafone – each with their own data plans.

O2 is to offer three plans:

£2 a day for 500MB access – no contract

£10 a month – 1GB of usage

£15 a month – 3GB of usage

O2 Customers can cancel their contracts with 24hours notice – at the end of the month.

Orange’s pay monthly option is a better deal for more ‘heavy’ users with a £25 a month tariff for 10GB usage. Whereas all three of O2’s plans come with unlimited free Wi-Fi access through BT Openzone and The Cloud, only Orange’s pay monthly deals come with this access and only include 750MB of Wi-Fi browsing.

And as yet, Vodafone have not announced the details of their pricing plans, although some websites have speculated – no official announcements have been made.

Last Friday, Samsung were the first provider to hit the shops with a 3D TV. Available to the UK general market; Samsung have invested heavily with a £8m ad campaign to promote their offering as being the first in the market. This initial move is set to be the start of a “3D Summer” after the success on the big screen of movies such as Avatar.

Samsung officially launched its 40” 3D set through selected John Lewis, Currys and Comet branches, with a retail price of £1,799. Customers who purchase the Samsung model will also have to buy a pair of battery operated ‘active’ glasses at a cost of £150. A considerable investment considering the only 3D Blu-Ray movie currently available to customers is Monsters vs Aliens. However each retailer offering the model do have packages available where you can get a discount on the price of the glasses so be sure to check all three!

However later in the year, Sky will launch its own 3D channel, expected to be shown in pubs and clubs within the year and Sony has also confirmed a firmware update to allow 3D gaming.

Sony, LG, Panasonic and Samsung are set to spend millions throughout the year to target consumers into purchasing their 3D offerings but Samsung has hit the market first with an advertisement by CHI, although as yet the three providers have remained relatively tight lipped on how they plan to enter the market, meaning this could be the start of an interesting summer for 3D fans!

The Canon EOS 550D sits just behind the EOS 50D in terms of specification. The EOS 550D holds a massive 18MP, and excellent ISO performance. Whilst boasting HD video capability, ability to manually control the exposure and compatibility with the full range of EOS lenses.

The 550D is not as quick as Canon’s 7D, but it can still shoot an impressive 3.7 frames per second in the Continuous Shooting Mode. It can offer full HD mode, rather than just standard HD – 1,920 x 1,080 pixels versus 1,280 x 720. This is an ideal DSLR for the serious amateur or somebody wanting to upgrade from an entry level model.

The plastic chassis of the camera is sturdy without feeling too heavy, and its light weight capability gives it the advantage over its larger, more professional counterparts. The 3” LCD screen is easy to read with a 1,040,000 pixel resolution. With all the usual features expected from a Canon of this level, navigation through the camera is user friendly.

The Canon EOS 550D is widely available from several retailers – however the best price we have found so far comes from Amazon for £692.80 including the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit . An extremely good buy considering its spec compared to some of its more professional competitors. It is important to be aware that when making a purchase like this, just how crucial gadget insurance could be. Paying a small premium each month could ensure you do not have to pay out again for another camera should your EOS 550D become damaged!
