Apple iPad: UK Pre-Orders & Tariffs Revealed

The Apple iPad is finally available for pre-order within the UK, after its initial launch on 27th January 2010. Pre-ordering was due to commence in March, however delays have now lead to a 28th May release date.

Apple sold over one million iPad devices within the first month in the US and this has been given as the reason for the delay in the UK. The IPad available for pre-order from £429 for the basic Wi-Fi unit. Expanding the memory to 32GB will cost £499 and £599 for the 64GB model. The Wi-Fi and 3G units are being sold at an extra £100 respectively.

The iPad will be available through 3 network providers: O2, Orange and Vodafone – each with their own data plans.

O2 is to offer three plans:

  1. £2 a day for 500MB access – no contract
  2. £10 a month – 1GB of usage
  3. £15 a month – 3GB of usage

O2 Customers can cancel their contracts with 24hours notice – at the end of the month.

Orange’s pay monthly option is a better deal for more ‘heavy’ users with a £25 a month tariff for 10GB usage. Whereas all three of O2’s plans come with unlimited free Wi-Fi access through BT Openzone and The Cloud, only Orange’s pay monthly deals come with this access and only include 750MB of Wi-Fi browsing.

And as yet, Vodafone have not announced the details of their pricing plans, although some websites have speculated – no official announcements have been made.
