Sony Ericsson Satio – iPhone Conqueror?
Can the expertise of Japan’s Sony and Sweden’s Ericsson really beat the iPhone? They happen to think so, with the launch of the new Sony Ericsson Satio which was unveiled earlier this week.
Sony Ericsson is the 4th largest mobile phone provider in the world, but recent declines in profit and demand for their products, has lead to big changes being needed to revitalise the firm and its offering. Nathan Vautier, managing director of Sony Ericsson UK, said the new Satio phone, which will hit the shops in October, is a “game-changer”.
The Satio – code named the ‘Idou’, will boast a collection of features, bringing together the strengths of both the Cybershot and Walkman brands. A 12 megapixel camera, multi-functional media playback and a 3.5-inch touch screen keypad are its main selling points. It will be available for free, on £35 a month contracts on all UK network providers, when it is launched in October.
In the first quarter of the 2009, mobile phone sales have been declining rapidly, by a record 8.6 pc. Experts believe that the mid-market phones such as the Sony Ericsson collection have been hardest hit, supported by the declining sales and profits for the brand. At the same time, demand for smartphones is booming with Apple and Nokia capitalising. Sony Ericsson will be hoping the Satio can bring them better in line with the market changes and turn the brand around.
