Apple iPhone 3G is unveiled

3g Apple iPhoneSteve Jobs, MD for Apple finally unveiled the new 2008 version of the Apple iPhone at the Moscone Center in front of over 5,000 developers yesterday.

Branded as being “twice as fast – at half the price” – Mr Jobs wowed the audience with the latest 3G developements that take the iPhone a stage closer to mobile heaven.

Looking very similar to the the first generation iPhone but with a plastic back casing, the iPhone 3G has an earphone jack that’s flush so you can use your own headphones.

Those looking for video calling and online conferencing were disappointed as the iPhone still keeps its 2 mega-pixel camera and no additional lenses.

But 3G and GPS has been what most of gossip columnists been talking about – the Map functionality has been upgraded to include GPS and allows you to watch your movements as you travel. The new software includes push email and easy synchronisation between phone and computer thanks to the new MobileMe service that replaces Mac – but some of these applications will require additional subscriptions or purchases via the new App Store.

It is reported that the 8GB will be available with black casing, whilst the 16GB will also be available in white.

So where can you buy one?

O2 have unveiled a cut price pricing structure with plans starting at £99  for the 8GB model – for consumers looking for a £30 or £35 tarriff. Whilst the iPhone 3G will be completely free for those wanting £45 or £75 monthly tarriffs.

The device, which will be available from the 11th July will also be available on business contracts – so all of those individuals that had to move to a consumer contract will soon be able to move back and claim their iPhone as a valuable business expense.

The 16GB model will cost £159 on the £30 and £35 tariffs, £59 on the £45 tariff and will be free on the £75 tariff.   For all those wanting to manage their spend, O2 will also be launching a Pay-As-You-Go contract.

Vodafone and Orange are also smiling as the have won distribution deals across Europe and other parts of the world. Orange will be launching the device in July in France, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland, and will announce further markets later on this year.

Look out for iPhone 3G at a store near you soon.

Don’t forget if you need to insure your new Apple iPhone Insure And Smile offer fantastic premiums with 48 hour replacements for theft, accidental damage including water damage.
