Announcing Apple 3.0

With some major rewrites on the cards, Apple announced the version 3.0 of its iPhone operating system would be previewed at a special event on Tuesday 17th March.

Apple iPhone 3.0 OSAlthough the details are clearly being kept under wraps there is wide speculation of what might be included in the next OS release.

iPhone owners are keeping their fingers crossed that the new software will have :-

  • - support for video,
  • - include turn-by-turn directions on maps
  • - possibly support Flash
  • - multimedia messaging (MMS)
  • - support for Bluetooth stereo headsets
  • - cutting and pasting within the browser
  • - and better search capabilities.

The news comes just days after Google announced that it will be releasing a new version of its Android operating system, codenamed Cupcake. And it looks like Apple’s announcement may be a tactical announcement to jump ahead of Google.

It remains to be seen whether the new 3.0 upgrade will work on all the current iPhones in the markeplace. Given that the first generation of iPhones are coming up to the end of their original 2 year contracts it could mean these poor owners are left out of the loop.

HTC Touch Diamond2 Available in UK soon

HTC Touch Diamond 2 Mobile PhoneWell the official announcement from the HTC camp is that the new HTC Touch Diamond2 is will be available in the UK in just over a month’s time. Following on from the incredibly popular HTC Touch Diamond HD phone, the Diamond2 has a tough reputation to live up to if it is going to be one of the top smart phones of 2009.

HTC have always released stylish phones and the Diamond2 is no exception. No angled corners on this model, just beautiful rounded corners and a high gloss finish. The phone comes complete with a 3.2 inch touch screen display that has a great zoom feature on board, so you can enlarge specific areas of the screen when you are browsing or viewing gallery pictures.

The new HTC screen has a resolution of 400 x 800 pixels which means you get fantastic, crisp and sharp images. Remove the stylus, which tucks neatly into the body of the phone and use it to navigate the device which uses an updated version of HTC’s TouchFLO 3D navigation software. A great bit of software that makes the phone easy to use and pretty much sets it on a par with the Apple iPhone.

HTC Touch Diamond 2 ScreenNot forgetting the Windows capability, the HTC Diamond 2 hosts a small Windows icon, that when pressed, opens up the familar Windows Mobile applications such as Word and Excel. A great touch that expands this phones capabilities and turns it into a great mini PC in your pocket.

The Touch Diamond2 features an impressive 5.0 megapixel camera that supports zoom but unfortunately does have a flash onboard.

Keeping you connected is HSDPA which can reach speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps plus Wi-Fi connectivity so when you’re in a hot spot or if you have a wireless network at work or home, you can use this for web access and avoid any hefty data charges. GPS is also built in for satellite navigation. Storage isn’t a problem thanks to expandable memory supporting up to 16GB microSD memory cards and the battery life has been greatly improved.

HTC Touch Diamond 2 Screen LandscapeThe 2009 HTC Touch Diamond2 easily outperforms its predecessor thanks to a larger and higher resolution screen, better camera and overall better design. Can it take on the Apple iPhone - well we will have to wait and see. However, with the addition of Windows Mobile on a touch screen phone that already has some amazing functionality then it could well take the smartphone crown.

Ful information of the HTC Touch Diamond2 on the HTC website.

Don’t forget that Insure and Smile are a specialist Mobile Phone Insurance company in the UK and we will be adding HTC Touch Diamond 2 Mobile Phone Insurance as soon as it is available in the UK in April.

Apple MacBook Pro, A Vision of Beauty

Apple MacBook ProIf you own a Mac Book then you will already be aware of the how well these machines are engineered. However, Apple have done an incredible job in redesigning the range with even more seductive beauty for their relaunch models.

The new MacBook comes in a 15-inch or 17-inch precision aluminum body that is slim and ever-so streamlined. An d now with a battery life of up to 8 hours what more could you want from a laptop.

The high-performance NVIDIA graphics with GeForce 9600 GT delivers faster discrete graphic performance for high-end 3D games and pro applications. So if you are looking for a MAC that is man enough to edit videos as well as play games - here it is ! The high-resolution display offers an impressive 1440 x 900 pixel resolution supporting richer, more vibrant colors.

The entry level MacBook comes with 256MB of dedicated memory, so this baby will really fly, but for those that want ultimate performance then there is the 512MB version. The power plant behind the Apple MacBook Pro is an Intel 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor which is backed by 2GB of RAM and there is even a 250GB hard drive fitted.

A range of ports are lined along the left-hand side of the case and includes two USB ports and a Firewire 800 port. The Firewire port is especially useful, as it proves faster than current USB speeds when transferring files to and from external drives.

Swicth off the lights and you will notice that the keyboard is also fully backlit. It also automatically adjusts brightness as ambient light gets brighter or darker. Die-hard Apple users may miss the old keyboard seen on previous MacBook Pro’s, but this more than makes up for it. The touchpad also gets an overhaul and manages to hide the mouse button away as it’s incorporated into the same piece of aluminium.

Perhaps a Blu-Ray player would have been too much to ask but there is no denying that this is a great bit of kit to look at and use. At £1,369 for the 15 inch and £1,949 for the 17-inch these are now ordinary notebooks. What it does show is howere, is how capable Apple are in delivering a product that not only looks good but also out performs a lot of laptops on the market.

Nokia N97 Releases in May

Nokia N97Mobile Phone giants Nokia have been teasing the gadget world at the Mobile World Congress that the new N97 mobile phone will be launched in the UK at the end of May 2009. Since the announcemnet of the “world’s most advanced mobile computer” we have been waiting with baited breath to see when it might just hit the stores. Well it looks like the wait could be finally over.

Nokia promise that it will bring users closer to the Internet on the move than ever before putting put high-speed web access at the heart of its new device, along with one-button, ‘always-on’ access to social-networking sites such as Facebook. The phone also uses a built-in GPS technology to provide location-specific information. The new service from Nokia, called ’social location’, will enable N97 users to update their social-networking profiles with precise details about their location and find nearby friends.

The phone boasts a large 3.5 inch touch-screen, similar to that found on the Apple iPhone, but incorporates a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Challenging the iPhone head on, the Nokia N97 will support Flash video, instant messaging and email on the go. A 5 Megapixel camera is also onboard as well as … (listen for the drum-roll please) a whopping 48GB of memory (32GB plus a 16GB MicroSD Card) - three times the size of the 16GB iPhone version.

Nokia has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple, Google and Blackberry. However, the Nokia Tube 5800 proved they were series contenders. Lets hope the Nokia N97 lives up to expectations and they can keep their promise of delivering at the end of May.

Insure and Smile are a specialist Mobile Phone Insurance company. Nokia N97 Mobile Phone Insurance will be availabe as soon as the handset is launched in the UK.

Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition

Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition Mobile PhoneThe Tocco goes Ultra - its official.

Samsung finally came out with an official announcement detailing the new S8300 phone. Packed with touchscreen technology the new handset pulls together two legends of the Samsung stable - the Tocco and the Samsung Soul.

Mobiles.co.uk have blogged about this great new phone earlier on in the week and it is certainly looking like a stunning new handset.

Want to check out the specification?

Well the Tocco Ultra features a 2.8 inch full touchscreen display, an accelerometer (similar to the Apple iPhone) which auto rotates the screen from portrait to landscape and a standy sensor that switches the screen off in order to save battery life. It has an 8 Megapixel camera to capture all your favourite pictures and even has autofocus, face and smile detection. If it’s video you are after - well that is suported too, with 30 fps and a wealth of video editing options. HSDPA connectivity offering up to 7.2 Mbps for lightening quick browsing and downloads, a GPS Satnav receiver, Bluetooth and an MP3 player make this a very special mobile indeed.

The Tocco Ultra Edition really goes to town in the styling stakes - at just 12.8mm thick this is an incredibly slim phone. Although the mobile industry appears to be moving towards a full QWERTY keyboard, Samsung have taken the decision to stick with the traditional alpha-numeric keypad, so we will have to wait and see whether this affects its popularity in the future.

The Samsung Tocco Ulta Edition is set to launch in March, so if you are looking for a feature packed phone that WILL fit in your pocket then this could be the one for you.

The new slimline Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition

Don’t forget that if you do buy one Insure and Smile offer full insurance for Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition.

Smile! - its the Sony Ericsson C510 Cybershot

Sony Ericsson Cybershot C510In the last few days Sony Ericsson announced the new C510 Cybershot, the first mobile to include Smile Shutter™ technology.

Described as the most affordable Cyber-shot™ phone to date; the C510 Cyber-shot will be a new entry-level phone but packed with lots of goodies for camera phone fans everywhere.

The new C510 Cyber-shot promises a 3.2 mega pixel camera that uses a clever piece of technology called the Smile Shutter that automatically takes the photo when it detects your subject is smiling. How it does that, we don’t quite know - but it does mean you get perfect “smiley” pictures everytime you use it.

  • - A full feature spec for the C510 Cyber-shot™ includes:
  • - 3.2 megapixel Cyber-shot™ camera
  • - Smile Shutter™ – clever technology that detects a person’s smile and immediately takes the photo!
  • - Face Detection – focusing technology of up to three faces at a time
  • - Auto-rotation – alter the landscape and portrait view by rotating the mobile phone
  • - Snapfish by HP – pre-installed application allows users to send print orders from the phone to Snapfish and have quality photo prints delivered to your home.
  • - YouTube™ enabled – upload your videos and images straight to the web
  • - Photo Fix – adjust light balance, brightness and contrast simultaneously
  • - SMS conversation style – see your entire SMS conversation history at a glance
  • - Slide in lens cover and illuminated imaging Shortcuts
  • - Auto focus – to take the best shot

In addition to all of the great camera features the C510 is a very competent music player - supporting various file types with the option of expandable memory. Video recording and uploading to YouTube is also on-board - which will keep most owners very happy indeed.

Unfortunately, at this price Sony Ericsson couldn’t include Wi-Fi so instead mobile connectivity is covered by HSDPA mobile broadband.

The C510 Cybershot is expected for launch in March, with prices and network availability to be confirmed.

Don’t forget that Insure and Smile offers comprehensive insurance cover for all Sony Ericsson Mobile Phones.

Palm Smartphone set to launch

Hot off the press from the guys over at Crunchgear is that Palm are about to launch a new smartphone to rival the Apple iPhone. In a market that is already getting rather crowded with the likes of RIMs Blackberry Storm, the Nokia 5800 and Google’s Android the new handset has a lot to live up to.

According to the exclusive article by Crunchgear however, we could be in for a “something special”.

“We have information from a trusted source that the latest Palm smartphone running the Nova operating system will be launched this Thursday. The new phone will have a full QWERTY keyboard that will slide down under a portrait-oriented touchscreen.”

The article goes on to report that: “The new operating system is described as “amazing” and there will be a full software bazaar on launch. It will have media playback functions along with standard Palm calendar, email, and contact functionality.”

The buzz around the forums and blogs is all about how the new Palm will look, with lots of mock-up ideas being discussed. It is still unclear whether the new Palm device will focus on the consumer or on the corporate market but no doubt the new phone will include a whole host of new applications in order to show off the capabilities of its long-expected operating system.

Roll on Thursday’s launch !
